Evolutionary Genetics: Desperate Times Call for More Sex
نویسنده
چکیده
A new study has found that strains of the fungus Aspergillus nidulans produce more of their spores sexually in environments where they are less fit, resembling a hypothesized transitional stage in the evolution of sex.

Evolutionary diversity and turn-over of sex determination in teleost fishes.
Sex determination, due to the obvious association with reproduction and Darwinian fitness, has been traditionally assumed to be a relatively conserved trait. However, research on teleost fishes has shown that this need not be the case, as these animals display a remarkable diversity in the ways that they determine sex. These different mechanisms, which include constitutive genetic mechanisms on...
متن کاملThe chicken (Gallus gallus) Z chromosome contains at least three nonlinear evolutionary strata.
Birds have female heterogamety with Z and W sex chromosomes. These evolved from different autosomal precursor chromosomes than the mammalian X and Y. However, previous work has suggested that the pattern and process of sex chromosome evolution show many similarities across distantly related organisms. Here we show that stepwise restriction of recombination between the protosex chromosomes of bi...
متن کاملThe evolution of condition-dependent sex in the face of high costs.
Facultatively sexual organisms often engage in sex more often when in poor condition. We show that such condition-dependent sex carries evolutionary advantages and can explain the evolution of sexual reproduction even when sex entails high costs. Specifically, we show that alleles promoting individuals of low fitness to have sex more often than individuals of high fitness spread through a popul...
متن کاملPrevalence and determinants of hepatitis C virus infection among female drug injecting sex workers in Glasgow
BACKGROUND Few studies of the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection have focussed on women who work as street sex workers to finance their drug use. METHODS The investigators report the survey findings of such a population in Glasgow. All women attending the health and social care drop-in centre, situated in Glasgow's "Red Light Area", during a four-week period in 1999 were invited ...
متن کاملThe ecology and genetics of fitness in Chlamydomonas. VIII. The dynamics of adaptation to novel environments after a single episode of sex.
According to classical evolutionary theory, sexual recombination can generate the variation necessary to adapt to changing environments and thereby confer an evolutionary advantage of sexual over asexual reproduction. Using the green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, we investigated the effect of a single sexual episode on adaptation of heterotrophic growth on different carbon sources. In an ini...
